(Seychelles News Agency) - Eight Seychellois who made notable contributions to the tourism industry have been honoured with the engraving of their names at the Seychelles Tourism Pioneer Park.

The eight pioneers joined the contributors to the building of Seychelles' tourism industry, whose names are engraved on ceramic tiles displayed on concrete pillars at the park located at the entrance of the Seychelles Tourism Academy (STA) at La Misère.

The pioneers, who have all passed away, were unveiled in a video during the annual tourism ball last weekend and their awards presented to family members. They are former President James Mancham, Louis D’Offay, Maryse Eichler, Zita Monthy, Adrien Michel, John de Matta Mascarenhas, Richard Mancham and Raymonde Delorie.

The Minister for Tourism, Maurice Loustau-Lalanne, said it is vital to remember the pioneers’ contribution to the industry as they have dedicated their lives to create a more vibrant Seychelles, allowing visitors to have a wonderful experience.

“In most cases, these pioneers set out into uncharted waters with few points of reference beyond their own desire and determination to see Seychelles’ nascent tourism industries flourish,” said the Minister.

The Seychelles Tourism Pioneer Park was opened in 2015 by the former President James Michel as a way of honouring Seychellois who have dedicated their lives to the industry. The location is also significant as it is where young people interested in the field are trained. 

“With this pioneers park at the academy, students will start here, to learn about our pioneers who have their names on these walls, who dedicated their lives, energy and know-how for our tourism industry to be the success that it is today,” said Flavien Joubert, the Academy’s principal.

The initiative for the award started two years ago, to give value to individuals who have contributed in the tourism industry, said Sherin Francis, the chief executive of the Seychelles Tourism Board. It is an event that forms part of the annual Seychelles tourism week activities. 

For the coming year, the public can take part in the nomination of individuals for the award. 

“We invited the public to nominate individuals who can become tourism pioneer; we have a very long list of around 100 names. We will try our best to continue with such tradition,” she said.
