(Seychelles News Agency) - The Seychelles President James Michel expressed condolences and solidarity on Monday to the president of Ecuador Rafael Correa as the South American nation deals with the aftermath of a devastating earthquake.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families of the bereaved, may they find strength to overcome the grief caused by this tragedy,” said Michel in a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. 

The Seychellois head of state also expressed hope that relief agencies would be successful in ongoing rescue efforts.

It’s been confirmed that at least 272 people have been killed following the 7.8 magnitude quake that struck on Saturday, the biggest earthquake to hit Ecuador in decades. The 7.8 quake was followed by several aftershocks.

The Ecuadorian president said on Sunday that the toll will 'certainly' rise even further, according to an AFP report. 

At least 2,000 people are reported to have been injured and there are also reports of widespread damages, mainly along the coastal areas.

Rescue efforts involving thousands of police and military officers are ongoing and according to a BBC report Ecuador's president has declared a state of emergency saying finding survivors is a priority.

Rafael Correa has had to cut short a visit to Italy to deal with the crisis.
