Weightlifting and badminton win golds for Seychelles at the 2015 All-Africa Games

(Seychelles News Agency) - After winning triple gold at the Indian Ocean Island Games in Reunion in August, weightlifter Ruby Malvina made Seychelles proud on Wednesday winning the island nation’s first golds at the All-Africa Games, currently taking place in Congo, Brazzaville.
Competing in the 58 kg category on Wednesday, Malvina lifted 80 kg in snatch, which won her a silver medal before lifting 109 kg in clean and jerk to win gold bringing her total to 189 kg to win a second gold.
According to an article published in daily newspaper, Seychelles Nation this morning, Malvina said in a phone interview that she felt good to have won two golds and a silver as she was expecting three bronze medals.
“I fought hard when I stepped on the platform,” said Malvina.
Weightlifting also gathered some more medals for the island nation yesterday as Clementina Agricole, who is Seychelles' Sportswoman of the year 2014 won one silver and two bronze medals in the 63 kg category.
Agricole’s silver medal was for her 115 kg in clean and jerk while the two bronze medals were for her 91 kg in snatch and 206 kg total.
Nigeria’s Victoria Adesanmi clinched the category’s gold medal with a total lift of 211 kg.
In badminton, Seychellois Juliette Ah-Wan claimed one gold and a bronze in the women’s doubles and mixed doubles events, respectively.
Ah-Wan was playing alongside Alisen Camille in the women’s doubles finals where the pair eliminated their opponents from the neighbouring Indian Ocean island of Mauritius. Seychelles won the match 3 sets to 1.
In the mixed doubles Ah-Wan paired with Georgie Cupidon in the semi-finals. Unfortunately South Africa was a stronger opponent eliminating the Seychelles pair 2-0 to proceed to the finals leaving the Seychellois players to accept the bronze medal.
Georgie, Ah-Wan and Camille were all part of the mixed doubles team that won a bronze medal at the games last Saturday.
In other sports disciplines, the Seychelles women’s volleyball team confirmed a spot in the semi-finals on Wednesday when it defeated host nation Congo, Brazzaville winning its fourth consecutive win in Pool A.
The island nation still have to play against Egypt the other Pool A team that has won all games played so far. The match will be merely a formality as both Seychelles and Egypt have already secured their spot in the semi-finals.
Pool A comprises of Egypt, Senegal, Ghana, Botswana, Congo, Brazzaville and Seychelles, while Pool B comprises of Cameroon, Kenya, Algeria, Nigeria, Cape verde and Mozambique.
Things are not going as well for the Seychelles men’s volleyball and basketball teams.
In its first match yesterday, the men’s basketball team lost 49-63 against host nation Congo, while the men’s volleyball team have lost all three matches played so far.
The island nation’s team, which relinquished its Indian Ocean Games title in Reunion in August lost its first match 3-2 in a tight encounter against Cape Verde last Wednesday, before losing again 0-3 playing against Algeria last Sunday and 1-3 against Rwanda on Tuesday this week.
Seychelles’ delegation to the 2015 All-Africa Games, which is marking its 50th anniversary this year, amounts to 110 comprising of athletes, coaches and officials.
Seychellois athletes are competing in 12 sports disciplines against opponents from over 50 African countries in the quadrennial games, which will come to an end on September 19.
The athletes have been promised monetary rewards as a motivation to achieve good results.
Fifty thousand Seychelles rupees ($3,862) will be given to gold medalist, twenty-five thousand ($1,931) and fifteen thousand ($1,158) to silver and bronze medalists respectively.
