(Seychelles News Agency) - The second sports fishing event on the calendar of the Seychelles Sports Fishing Club (SSFC) in 2015 not only saw the landing of 5.5 tonnes of fish but also has the association excited about the possibility of earning an 'All-Tackle World Record' for one of the fish caught.

Mangi Katana, one of the anglers on board one of the participating teams, A1 Fishing Alati, managed to bring in an 8kg rusty jobfish at the end of competition last weekend.

SSFC’s Secretary, Grant Heyer, told SNA that the ‘pending all tackle world record’ for the rusty jobfish needs to be confirmed by the International Game Fish Association (IGFA).

“I am getting all the paperwork together to submit next week. It may take three months to confirm because we have to send the fishing line, etc to IGFA for confirmation,” said Heyer in an email to SNA.

The previous world record according to IGFA records is a 6.6 kilogram rusty jobfish caught in Japan in May 2002.

Participating in this year's National Fishing Tournament were a total of 12 boats, which set out Friday April 17 at 6.00 am local time, spent the night out at sea and returning before 3.00pm on Saturday April 18.

The annual competition that takes place during the month of April when the weather is calm was open for both trolling and bottom fishing.

Prizes were up for grabs for the best of 28 different categories of fish caught during the 33 hours of fishing from the likes of kingfish, sailfish, marlin and jobfish, among others.

Fourth consecutive win for Team Island Star

Team Island Star, captained by Marc Houareau, dominated the competition claiming the first prize for the fourth time in a row, which was not the only record set by the team this year.

“This year, our team went out to set another record and not only did we win the tournament for the fourth year in a row, but we set a new record by catching nearly 1.8 tonnes of fish,” Island Star’s Captain Marc Houareau told daily Newspaper TODAY in Seychelles adding that the team of nine had fished non-stop to achieve this feat.

With a total of 84 points, Island Star earned a stunning 47 points more than the runner-up, Team Paola.

The heaviest fish caught during the competition was an 88 kg marlin brought in by Team Bob Marlin.

“The weather was perfect. Participation remained strong with the same amount of teams as last year. As far as the end result, many types of fish were brought in which were sold to Oceana Fisheries [a local fish processing company based on the Seychelles main island of Mahé] and SSFC will use those proceeds for charitable projects,” Heyer told SNA adding that SSFC has not yet decided which charities to fund.

The next competition on SSFC’s calendar is the Heineken Slam planned for June 27 which will be done in conjunction with the Seychelles National Boat Show.

The Indian Ocean archipelago is known to have one of the richest big game fishing grounds in the world.
